How about some more music? Y La Bamba opened for Loch Lomond and Hey Marseilles at the Crocodile Cafe a few weeks ago (Loch Lomond + Hey Marseilles photos to come this week). This was my first show at the Crocodile and was a great one to start with. It was sold out, all of the bands had a ton of energy and a great sound, it made it really fun to shoot.

Photographers note . the venue was pretty dark for this show and most of the lights were red (our favorite, right?). I shot mostly in black+white straight out of the camera and stayed between 2500-3200 ISO all night. Minneapolis photographers: think old Turf Club red with Entry dark.

seattle helping haiti . sweet water

I’m going to be posting photos from the Seattle Helping Haiti event until Wednesday . 2.10, and during that time all of the profits from my etsy, redbubble, and photoshelter sites, along with all of the profits from photo shoots booked during this week, will go straight to Haiti via Partners in Health. PIH has been working in Haiti for over 20 years, they have low administrative costs (so more of your money actually makes it to Haiti), and I trust their knowledge and resources there.

I spent my last night in Minneapolis at Sauce for The Mood Swings’ CD Release party for Recessionista. Ashley, Sallie, and everyone at Susstones have always been super awesome and supportive of my photography; their show was the perfect way to end that chapter of my Minnesota music life.

All morning I’ve been listening to Minneapolis music and I don’t think anywhere else will be able to steal my music heart back. The talent in that city is unreal and I’m so lucky to have been surrounded by it for so many years.

This show was unreal, and this tweet still holds true (although, Winnipeg stole my heart again, as usual).

It was SO hot at the Varsity for this show. The entire place was like a sauna, and throughout the entire opener the crowd at the Varsity were total zombies. But then… Phoenix got on stage and we all hit that threshold where we skyrocketed through the humidity bubble and said “fuck it, let’s dance!”. And we did.

winnipeg folk festival . hey rosetta! . music photography

I went to Lollapalooza last year and had an amazing time. About 5 months afterwards my friend, Ryan Paul, introduced me to Margot and the Nuclear So & So’s and I’ve been head over heels in love with them ever since. No, really. Check out my Last.fm stats; it’s ridiculous. I decided that I needed to see them live and then when I was digging around I realized that not only did they play Lollapalooza, but they played RIGHT AFTER the Melismatics. I rocked out to the Melismatics, and then as Margot and the Nuclear So & So’s were setting up I literally walked away from the stage. To eat food, nonetheless! Not even to fill my soul with more amazing music! (Although, I scored VIP tickets to Lolla, so the food we had was AWESOME).

I decided that I could never let that happen again, so when the performers were announced for the Winnipeg Folk Festival this year I looked up all of the bands that I hadn’t seen before. I looked up Hey Rosetta! and this happened:

And then 5 days later!

Thankfully I checked them out before the festival because I definitely would’ve missed the show. They only played one time, which is super rare at Folk Fest, and they played on the alternate stage when Oumou Sangare was playing on the main stage. Lesson learned: do your research before you hit the festival grounds.

They threw down a great performance, even though they were running on little sleep and a lot of driving. Check out their website and buy their album, it’s the only thing that’s successfully given my iPod a break from playing Phoenix.

I only took a few shots during Iron & Wine’s set because I was too busy loving life and soaking in the music, and the air, and the people, and the… folk fest.

There’s a captivating quiet presence whenever Sam Beam takes the stage, and some how one man with an acoustic guitar was able to make the folk festival main stage the quietest I’ve ever seen. If you’re not convinced, check out this video:

There were 10,000 people there, and all of them were silent.
