It’s probably due to my Montour roots, but I’d much rather use something random around the house than go out and buy a tool for a specific use. (Or maybe it’s that I don’t prepare for anything, but instead suddenly need to do things RIGHT THIS SECOND, so scramble to find makeshift components.) Lately I’ve found a new favorite.
You know that ridiculously tiny spoon that comes with all IKEA sets that seemingly is only good for eating kiwi? It also happens to PERFECTLY fit into a seed tray, making it super easy to scoop seedlings up without mutilating their roots or mangling your seed tray.
Genius, I know.

I’ve talked about this with a couple of different people lately, but it seems as though our generation has missed out on some of the classic farm-to-table tricks. I thought I’d put some up here as I start doing them in my own apartment and I’m starting with the easiest one in the whole world: continually growing green onions.
I bought a bunch of organic green onions from the co-op about a month ago and after using them threw the white ends in a cup of water and put them on a window sill in my kitchen. The green part will keep growing (really quickly!) and you’ll never have to buy another bunch again. PLUS they’ll be fresh instead of wilted or slimy like they tend to get when kept in the fridge for too long.

side note: clearly I need to turn them more often.

This is mostly so I have a list of when I started which plants, but thought some other urban gardening peeps might be interested, too. I’ll update it as I continue to plant more this spring. I’ve transplanted a handful of tomatoes, brussel sprouts, and one ambitious pepper into some ‘pots’ that I made out of newspaper and they all seem to be very happy. Can’t wait to see how all of this turns out!
Has anyone else started yet?
